Google introduces the “No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA”


Are you a robot? Isn’t spelling out those distorted words on websites annoying? The search giant, Google revealed a new, simpler Captcha last Wednesday, one that makes it more simpler and less frustrating by just clicking a checkbox that says, “I’m not a robot”. It makes it easier for humans to submit their information on a contact form online, while also improving overall security.

Pretty cool, right? How does it detect robots? According to a blog post, Vinay Shet, Google’s Product Manager of reCAPTCHA, explains that “To counter this, last year we developed an Advanced Risk Analysis backend for reCAPTCHA that actively considers a user’s entire engagement with the CAPTCHA—before, during, and after—to determine whether that user is a human.” For instance, this new engine enables us to rely less on spelling out annoying distorted words and, in turn, offer a better experience for all of us as users.

It’s even more secure than before, Google says. Shet writes that, “In cases when the risk analysis engine can’t confidently predict whether a user is a human or an abusive agent, it will prompt a CAPTCHA to elicit more cues, increasing the number of security checkpoints to confirm the user is valid.” For example, it adds another layer of security to make double sure that you are really human.

Vicarious, a company that develops artificial intelligence systems, claimed a year ago to have created a tool that could easily defeat any word CAPTCHA (it stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) up to 90% of the time.

Mobile-friendly reCAPTCHAs

noCaptcha-mobileSince there is no mouse cursor on mobile, Google’s awesome check box won’t work on smartphones and tablets. However, Google uses a different kind of reCAPTCHA for mobile, one that tests users to identify various photos that match a sample. For example, it might show a photo of a cat and then show nine more photos, four of which are also cats. That kind of visual information makes it more difficult for a computer to interpret than just words.

Google calls its majestic tool “No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA,” and any website can implement the API. Some of the first services including WordPress and Snapchat use this tool. Shet points out that, “For example, in the last week, more than 60% of WordPress’ traffic and more than 80% of Humble Bundle’s traffic on reCAPTCHA encountered the No CAPTCHA experience—users got to these sites faster.”

As it rolls out, it makes various services safe from bots — at least for a time. Inevitably, those bots are always evolving, the arms race will continue. But for now, web users can pop some champagne in celebration that the days of spelling out those complicated distorted words are over. It is helping users to get past security barriers faster and with less frustration.
